About

Aqua Marooned! is a card game by game designer Adrienne Mackey, founder and artistic director of Swim Pony, an experience design company known for developing innovative, immersive experiences of play. Each beautifully-illustrated card is different, showing vivid pictures of plants, insects, and animals—as well as a cast of playful alien characters. Created by Mackey along with illustrator/graphic designers Meg Lemieur and Bri Barton (known for their project Water Ways) and writer Brad Wrenn, the game casts each player as an extraterrestrial explorer curious to learn as much as they can about the earth’s mysterious “watersphere.”

Take note, this is not a deck you deal while sitting at a table! Each card in Aqua Marooned! calls out a challenge to get you excited and curious as you explore the outdoors. Prompts range from the silly (Find a dead thing and give it a heartfelt eulogy. Most heartfelt wins.), to the physical (Race to the nearest body of water), to the reflective (Sit in silence and notice the sounds around you). Meant to encourage appreciation and emotional connection to the flora and fauna of the watershed, the game is aimed towards teens and adults across a wide range of personality types and skill sets.

Aqua Marooned! was designed for the 23 AWE Centers but it is also playable anywhere you can get outside. In addition to the main deck, each Center also has a unique expansion deck of its own: Whether it’s how humans have shaped the region’s waterways at the Independence Seaport Museum or the unique history of John James Audubon’s environmental preservation at Mill Grove. An extra special expansion pack, playable anywhere in the Lenapehoking region, will delve into the indigenous local history of the Lenape tribe, developed with authorship from tribal members, instilling a sense of understanding and reverence for the original caretakers of this land. In short, Aqua Marooned! fosters a love of nature and is also ridiculously fun to play.
