Indigenous Peruvian boat-building techniques, Water Spirit

aymar_headshot.jpg

Aymar Ccopacatty is collaborating with Sarah Kavage on ARC, a sculptural boat made from Phragmites reeds, at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. Born in Peru, Ccopacatty studied sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design. He currently resides in Newport, RI. Aymar makes colorful collage images and textiles, often using traditional techniques inherited from his native Aymara family; he is especially known for using recycled plastic bags and other cast-off materials to make his work. His process is influenced by synchronistic Andean philosophical beliefs and illustrates willingness toward integration, tolerance and harmony toward everything that is new on our holistic earth.
